Unle commits to UNL wrestling

Senior wrestler Abdi Unle announced his commitment to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Oct. 14.

Head coach Jason Susnjar believes Nebraska will be a good fit for Unle.

“Not necessarily like college, but even beyond that, like international wrestling, Olympic wrestling, making U-20 teams and U-23 teams, Nebraska is the best fit for that,” Susnjar said.

Unle said when he started recieving offers from colleges last year, it was eye opening.

“It showed me that I was wanted and that other people saw how good I was,” Unle said.

Although he’s grateful, Unle said the commitment process was a little annoying.

“Coaches are always not necessarily nagging at you, but calling you, texting you, seeing how you are,” Unle said. “Eventually, you have to decide on one of them.”

Susnjar said Unle contributes to the team by being their quiet leader.

“He’s the guy that you can look at, and everybody knows he’s the guy, and try to emulate what he does,” Susnjar said.

Susnjar believes Unle will be a good asset for Nebraska.

“His speed is elite, and seeing him in the next level is going to be exciting,” Susnjar said.

When he first met Unle, Susnjar knew he’d be good.

“He had the tools to be very good when I met him,” Susnjar said. “He has put that upon himself to make himself as good as he is, which is very uncommon.”

When visiting schools, Unle and Susnjar knew Nebraska was going to be the school for him.

“After every visit that we went on, there was always the conversation of what do you want, or what college is the best fit for you,” Susnjar said.

Susnjar had an overall great experience coaching Unle.

“He’s been next level, he’s every bit of Division One and so on,” Susnjar said. “He’s truly what it means to be elite, and we’re happy he’s a Bryan Bear.”
