Omaha Central High adopted Chess as part of the E-Sports program this fall and they’ve started the year with hardware for the Nest!
Previous to the eSports Central has had tons of success with in person chess tournaments. Their banner outside of the Business Management and Information Technology department boasts 24 of championships with four straight titles from 2003-2007.
Coach Jon Franta has advocated to open the array of games the E-Sports teams offered and both conferences, PlayVS and Nebraska Schools Esports Association (NSESA) followed suit adding chess. The NSESA is hosting their state tournament over the previous weekend and this upcoming weekend with several Central teams representing.
The championship team is lead by Coach Stephen Bouma and players: Dominic Zeisler, Paul Adams, and Marcus Combs. The eagles beat Lincoln East in the match. Eagles won six games to three in a round robin tournament. The Eagles were undefeated entering this tournament, so the confidence was soaring.
As Central competes in the PlayVS conference for chess they will be tested going up against other teams from around the United States.
