The Central High eSports team is storming the state tournament in all four categories for the Nebraska Schools Esports Association League.
The Eagles qualified in division 1 playing: Overwatch 2, Super Smash Bros, League of Legends, and new division Chess. The Eagles are in the finals of three of the four games. They will travel to Midland University to compete on November 22nd to 23rd for the chance to bring home Central’s first esports championship.
Head Coach Jon Franta’s crew has excelled quickly being only the teams second year since its founding. Franta credits this success with three key ingredients, “create and environment kids are welcomed into, a place students want to get better, and stress the importance of being coachable.”
Coach Franta helped conceive this program joining Central High in 2023 and hit the ground running. The Eagles started competing in the PlayVS league nationally and joined the NSESA in the spring of 2024. Franta has helped other programs around Omaha Public Schools get off the ground. Two of his former assistant coaches now are leading other OPS High School programs.
Coach Franta has Coach Noah Vassa working alongside him in the Nintendo Switch arena. Vassa formerly coached football and basketball at the nest, but pivoted to join Franta with the esports crew last fall.
Matches will be streamed between two Twitch accounts: Midland University and the NSESA account. Fans can tune in anywhere and watch your Eagles compete. NSESA will follow the schedule to exact time to ensure that fans from around Nebraska can catch their athletes.
