The third-ranked Warriors will be taking on the Millard North Mustangs, Friday, Oct. 1, at Buell Stadium.
Both teams are coming off of high scoring games as Millard North beat Bryan by 68 points and Westside came off of a 34 point win against the Islanders. The Warriors are trying to continue their winning streak and sophomore Linebacker Beau Ryan expressed that the Warriors have worked hard to prepare for this week’s matchup.
“I think we’ve prepared well, and everyone is putting in work,” Ryan said. “We’ve been watching a lot of film, and the coaches have been trying out and installing different schemes.”
Ryan, who is just a sophomore and is a first year varsity player, wasn’t expecting to take on such a big role this season. Many players have had to step up after several injuries this season, Ryan being one of those players.
“At the beginning of the season, I could have never imagined I would’ve had the role I do now,” Ryan said. “When Tommy (Connelly) got hurt, I knew I had to step up, not just for that game, but for the whole season.”
Everyone in the Westside community acknowledges a quarterback competition between senior Kolby Brown and sophomore Anthony Rezac. Quarterback Coach Craig Secora expressed that the quarterback’s performance is based on many things, practice being one of them.
“Quarterbacks, just like every position, are evaluated based on practice and game performance,” Secora said, “There are quarterback competitions daily.”
Last week against Grand Island, Anthony Rezac took over at quarterback and put on a show. Rezac put up 124 yards through the air, and 78 yards on the ground, while passing two touchdowns, one to his older brother, Dom. Secora says we can expect Rezac to be taking snaps on the first drive this Friday night.
“Anthony had an outstanding game last week and he’s earned the right to get another game under center.” Secora said.
The Warriors will be looking to continue their 17 game winning streak as they take on the Millard North Mustangs on Friday Oct. 1 at 7 pm.
